Reflections on Fall Semester

December 15, 2011

The freedom of choice that we offer at Talking Stick has facilitated incredible creativity, developmental growth, and integration of academic subjects such as math, writing, and physics, this semester. Painting, building, game making, and drawing were hot activities. Much focus and determination led to the creation of k-nex structures. One student used trial and error on a large scale with the addition spinning elements to inspire others to make similar structures that could encompass their whole bodies. This led to a discussion about respecting the work of others.

Fresh air, sunshine and climbing trees with friends were thouroughly enjoyed. Some conflicts arose outside involving territory and exclusion. We addressed these issues through thoughtful discussion and resolutions agreed to by all parties involved.

Happiness and freedom go hand in hand. While many schools have 15 minute recesses, we spend a considerable amount of time outside, doing yoga, running, socializing and learning about nature. From scat, to animal decomposition, birds of prey, leaf varieties and insects, the outdoors provides anendless invitation to experiential learning.
At Talking Stick, we share our talents and hobbies. People who take music lessons at home revel in sharing what they have learned with friends. Such demonstrations have led to rapt audiences and participation in the form of singing. While this happened in the hall, a math game went on in one room and a play was written in another.
Writing workshop, for 9 year olds and up, continued to foster collaboration and creativity. Important writing concepts were introduced and practiced to establish a background from which to take creative leaps. Some compositional work was also included. The class held a reception and did a live reading of their work for all the day program participants and their parents. Their work was jointly complied into their literary magazine A Wandering Thought.
Going from one room to another observing the intensity of activity that abounds at Talking Stick is constantly rewarding. A glance shows embroidery at one table, a restaurant developing at another end of the room, people appreciating our latest literary and artistic zine on a sofa. One overhears conflicts being resolved with compassion, spelling being grappled with, and games of strategy being developed using imagination and collaboration.
Talking Stick is a life affirming environment. Within a framework of expectations of respect for others and materials, participants move from one new experience to another, challenging themselves and others to explore beyond what they know and skills they already have.
